NJPW Sakura Genesis 2017 Review

It’s the latest big show for NJPW, with Shibata vs. Okada as the main event!.
I missed the first few undercard matches and I’m not really bothered to go watch them, heard they were pretty fun though apart from the Jr Tag title match.

Toru Yano/Tomohiro Ishii vs. Kenny Omega/Bad Luck Fale

Solid match here between these 4, had some fun Yano bits and a nice finishing stretch from Omega and Ishii, with Omega finally getting revenge for his loss in the New Japan Cup. Good stuff.
Winners: Omega/Fale(via One Winged Angel) ***1/4

Hiroshi Tanahashi/Ryusuke Taguchi/Juice Robinson/Ricochet vs. Los Ingobernables Japon(SANADA/BUSHI/EVIL/Tetsuya Naito)

Another solid tag match here, they kept the action up and everyone pretty much got to get their shit in, I particularly enjoyed Ricochet’s one fluid sequence of offence. In the end Juice pins Naito and subsequently challenges him for the intercontinental belt. I love the momentum the guys been building for himself recently and the crowd are really getting into him.
Winners: Tanahashi’s team(Via Pulp Fiction) ***1/2

IWGP Tag Team Title match: War Machine vs. TenKoji (c)

This was really good and an impressive showing from War Machine. They dominated some of the first half and then when TenKoji made the come back it built to a great homestretch with War Machine getting the titles. Crowd really got into it before the end and it really gave War Machine a chance to shine, showing off their power and even some of their more Athletic stuff (moonsault, Suicide Dive etc.). Very solid.
Winners: War Machine(via Fallout) ***3/4

NEVER Openweight Title match: Hirooki Goto (c) vs. Zack Sabre Jr.

Another really good match here, Zack tried his best to pick apart Goto with particular focus on his arm, but Goto managed to overcome that and the interference by Minoru Suzuki and Desperado to retain his belt. Great fighting spirit by Goto, match was a nice mix of tecnhical and physical offense, good showing by both men very enjoyable.
Winner: Goto(via GTR) ***3/4

-Minoru brawls with Goto after the match, so I guess thats our next NEVER Title match…Very nice.

IWGP Jr Heavyweight Title match: Hiromu Takahashi vs. Kushida

This match went just under 2 minutes….and it was awesome, Kushida went after Hiromu before he even entered the ring and kept up his offense and til he fell victim to an apron sunset flip bomb and Hiromu just straight up took him out. Very rare for a title match to be so short and it was great because it made Hiromu look like a super strong champ and the crowd completely lapped it up.
Winner: Hiromu(via TimeBomb) NR

-Post-match Kushida lies motionless in the ring and Hiromu goes after him again but Ricochet makes the save and challenges him for the title…that should be awesome.

IWGP Heavyweight Title match: Kazuchika Okada vs. Katsuyori Shibata

Absolutely incredible main event here, tremendous work from both men and the crowd were super hot throughout. They started with a lots mat based wrestling and the physicality just grew and grew until an absolutely intense finishing stretch that had me on the edge. This is definitely one of the longest matches Shibata has had and they worked it incredibly well. It’s unfortunate Shibata didn’t get the title but the crowd still loved the effort he put in and I’m sure he’ll finally get it soon. Fantastic stuff, Highly recommended.
Winner: Okada(via Rainmaker) *****

-Post-match Fale attacks him from behind and wants the belt, which I guess makes sense since he was in the NJ Cup final…at least it’ll be an easier night for Okada.

Overall this another really good show from NJPW, all the main matches delivered some good stuff and the main event is definitely a MOTYC and must-see, crowd were awesome too. New Japan on a great streak. ****
