Dragon Gate – Dead Or Alive 2017 Review

doa

So I haven’t managed to watch any Dragon Gate so far this year so I decided to go ahead and watch their latest PPV featuring the big cage match. Lets Go.

Dark Match – Jimmy Kanda & Syachihoko BOY vs. Shun Skywalker & Hyou Watanabe

Fun little pre-show match, the usual expected DG fast paced back and forth action. Skywalker and Watanbe had some particularly impressive athletic moves, in the end veteran Kanda gets the win hitting ‘Ryu’s’ on Watanabe.
Winners: Kanda/Syachihoko BOY(via Ryu’s) ***

Match 1 – Over Generation (Eita & Gamma) & Drastik Boy vs. Tribe Vanguard (Flamita, Kzy & Yosuke Santa Maria)

Good match here, more fun fast paced back and forth action, Flamita was definitely the standout with Drastik Boy not far behind, very impressive stuff by them and Flamita actually gets the win hitting the Flam Fly on Drastik.
Winners: Tribe Vanguard(via Flam Fly) ***1/4

Match 2 – Don Fujii & Masaaki Mochizuki vs. VerserK (Punch Tominaga & YASSHI)

This was pretty good, they start fighting before the bell even rings and end up on the outside, they end up on the outside again a little later on, where Fujii and YASSHI go up on the balcony and Fujii throws Yasshi down the stairs. VerserK also use a couple dirty tactics and get a short amount of control but the match is mainly back and forth. Fair play to Mochizuki he really landed some stiff kicks in this, at the end he gets Punch in a tree of Woe and kicks him hard in the head, Fujii then picks Punch up and delivers a massive Nodowa Otoshi of the top rope to get the 3 count.
Winner: Fujii/Mochizuki(via Avalanche Nodowa Otoshi) ***

Match 3 – Open The Brave Gate Title Match: Jimmy Kagetora (c) vs. Takehiro Yamamura

This was great. Kagetora worked Yamamura’s leg throughout and Yamamura does a good job of selling it, he manages to fight through the pain to hit some stuff, but the biggest effect of it comes when he hits a stardust press which hurts his leg and delays him going for the pin, so he only gets a 2 count(always love little things like that), this leads to a thrilling little final stretch where Yamamura comes mightily close to winning the title but in the end Kagetora gets the upperhand and hits a Gurumakakari to get the pinfall and retain the belt. Really enjoyed that.
Winner: Kagetora(via Gurumakari) ****

Match 4 – Jimmyz (Genki Horiguchi HAGeeMee, Jimmy K-ness JKS, Jimmy Susumu & Ryo Jimmy Saito) vs. MaxiMuM (Ben-K, Big R Shimizu, Kotoka & Masato Yoshino)

Really solid multi-man match full of back and forth fun action, Ryo ‘Jimmy’ Saito gets the win with the Double Cross. Not much else to say really just the usual fun Dragon Gate multi-man.
Winners: Jimmyz(via Double Cross) ***1/2

Match 5 – Open The Twin Gate Title Match: Over Generation (CIMA & Dragon Kid) (c) vs. VerserK (El Lindaman & T-Hawk)

This was good. Verserk spend the majority of in control, first with Cima then with Dragon kid, their control stuff isn’t the most interesting to be honest but they all really pick it up towards the end to deliver a fun finishing stretch with Over Generation getting the win and retaining their titles with a Meteora/Bible combination.
Winners: Over Generation(via Meteora/Bible combo) ***1/4

Main Event – Open The Dream Gate Title vs. Hair vs. Mask Five Way Steel Cage Match: YAMATO (c) vs. BxB Hulk vs. Cyber Kong vs. Naruki Doi vs. Shingo Takagi

Well this was quite fun, it’s definitely Jam packed and a little messy But pretty enjoyable. the first 15 minutes they spend getting the flags, with all their team members on the outside trying to help stop them by various odd means like water, sticks, rackets, balloons filled with powder etc. Flamita even does a moonsault off the cage onto everyone outside at one point, though the cameraman unfortunately misses the landing. Also Cyber Kong has to require rope ladder to climb the cage which is odd but kinda funny. This first part of the match was a bit jumbled though and little tedious and it’s not til all the flags are gotten that things pick up as they start trying to eliminate each other with some fun action. Eliminations are as follows:
BxB Hulk eliminated via CyberBomb
Shingo eliminated via Galleria
Naruki Doi eliminated via Pineapple bomber
Which leaves YAMATO and Cyber Kong as the final two to try and retrieve the belt, they have a nice little exchange until YAMATO locks in a sleeper and Shingo and the rest of Verserk come into the cage and attack YAMATO and take out the referee, Shingo even piledrivers YAMATO through a table and they dismantled the ropes. Eventually the rest of Tribe Vanguard come to make the save and clear out Verserk which allows YAMATO to take out Kong and grab the title to retain.  Crowd were super into this and I enjoyed it to an extent, it was fun but a little convoluted, obviously I don’t keep up with Dragon Gate much though so I don’t know the story behind things, so the match probably benefits people who follow the promotion more closely.
Winner: YAMATO ***

-Post-match Yamato removes Cyber Kong’s mask which shall be gone forever(I think).

This was a pretty good show overall, I really liked the Kagetora/Yamamura match which by far MOTN and only match I’d truly recommend, all the tag matches were pretty solid but nothing special and the cage match was quite fun but I wouldn’t recommend it much especially given its 45 minute run-time. All in all quite a fun show. ***1/4
