It’s Smackdown Live and we are only 5 days away from Backlash, lets see how things go.
-Show opens with Kevin Owens’ Highlight Reel…says he is now the new host of the highlight reel since he put Jericho on the injured list and he’ll do the same to Styles on Sunday.
-He proceeds to introduce his guest in french but AJ Styles comes out before he can finish…Styles surprised Owens would stoop so low to steal Jericho’s show…Owens says he didn’t steal anything he can just do anything better than Y2J like how he’ll beat Styles…He wonders why Styles is even out cause Styles is not his guest…Styles apologises since he can’t understand french but says he’ll beat Owen for the US title and bring it back to the USA..He says why bother waiting, starts walking up the ring steps.
-Jinder Mahal then comes out, he was supposed to be the guest and talk about his match with Orton at Backlash…Jinder said what will happen is exactly what happened last week and that is he’ll pin Orton….Styles says maybe Jinder should focus on tonight…Jinder says Styles is gonna lose like Orton and Owens agrees, Styles then goes after Owens who exits the ring, Styles hen tells Jinder to get in the ring so they can start the AJ Styles Highlight reel. Simple opening segment to hype two matches, that was fine.
Match 1 – Jinder Mahal vs. AJ Styles
This was a decent little match, Jinder’s gets some control which honestly was a little bland, but they picked it up well towards the end and thought it was quite enjoyable, Styles is definitely a good opponent for Jinder to help him look good and credible. In the end Singh Brothers distract the ref and Style is read to hit his Phenomenal forearm but Owens gets off commentary and smashes the U.S belt into AJ’s leg, allowing Jinder to hit The Khallas to get the victory.
Winner: Jinder Mahal(via The Khallas) **3/4
-We get a fun Fashion Files segment where Breeze has done some reconnaissance disguised as a janitor. I’ve really liked these segments, been a good way to try and put them over with the crowd.
-Randy Orton interviewed backstage about Jinder, he says people don’t like Jinder cause he’s different, they don’t like him cause he’s an ass.
Match 2 – Breezango vs. The Colons
Match starts during commercial break so we are joined in progress. It’s a pretty decent and simple formulaic tag match. Colon’s get control and then Breeze gets the hot tag, leading to Fandango getting the win with a falcon arrow.
Winners: Breezango(via falcon arrow) **1/2
-Post-match Uso’s come out and cut a fun little promo about the Uso penitentiary.
-Next is the contract signing for the 6 women tag team match at Backlash, Shane O’Mac comes out to begin and introduces everyone.
-Natalya is the first to talk and calls all her opponents pathetic and will prove on Sunday who the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be… the Welcoming Committee all sign the contract…Becky Lynch says she’s happy she didn’t join the Committee and can’t wait to slap each and everyone of them…Naomi says she’s gonna Snatch? them all…Charlotte says she’s gonna solve all their problems at Chicago, beat the Committee and then she’s coming for Naomi’s title.
-Shane’s about to finish things but James Ellsworth interrupts and talks down all the women, Naomi grabs him but Carmella smashes her head into the table and everyone has to break them up…Shane then puts Naomi and Carmella in a match to happen right away. Again simple segement to hype the match that wasn’t bad.
Match 3 – Carmella vs. Naomi
This was alright, Carmella barely got any offense in and it was almost all Naomi which I was fine with since Carmella isn’t the best of workers and it’s fair for the champ to look dominant. During the match, Ellsworth gets ejected from ringside and at the end the ref tries to eject the rest of the Committee but they end up brawling with Becky and Charlotte. Naomi then dropkicks Tamina through the ropes and while her back his turned Carmella takes advantage with a roll-up giving her the 3 count.
Winner: Carmella(via roll-up) **1/2
-Doplh Ziggler cuts a promo in the locker room…He’s done his research and he’s gonna show footage of what Shinsuke Nakamura has done in the WWE…they play a video that says ‘Footage not found’…It cuts back to Ziggler and he says that’s right Nakamura has done nothing in WWE but he as done everything, so now they show video hyping Dolph Ziggler…Ziggler says he’s gonna expose Nakamura for the fraud he is and beat him before Nakamura has even begun.
-Sam Zayn is interviewed backstage, says that his match with Baron Corbin at Backlash has been granted, he talks about Baron targeting him since he arrived on Smackdown and the reasons why…Baron attacks him from behind and tells him he should learn to stay down, cause if he shows up on Sunday he’ll put him down permanently.
Main Event – Baron Corbin vs. Randy Orton
This was decent, Was a bit slow going but was fine overall. Corbin got a good bit of control but in the end fell victim to an RKO. Corbin did his slide out of the ring, run around the post, run back in ‘bit’ 3 times including for the finish when he gets RKO’d, which I felt was a little too many, 2 times would have worked fine. Anyway match wasn’t bad, certainly nothing special.
Winner: Randy Orton(via RKO) **3/4
-Post-match Jinder comes out and says a few words, Singh Brothers attack Orton from behind but he manages to defend himself. He goes for to give them a double hanging DDT but Jinder hits him from the back and they all gang up and attack him. Jinder finally hits The Khallas and stands tall holding the World Title Belt. giving him good momentum going into Sunday.
Well this show was alright, everything from the matches to the segments were fine at best and nothing really stood out or was particularly good, it was all very typical hypes for the PPV and while it was an easy show to get through, it’s largely forgettable. Not bad, but ok.
