AJPW Super Power! 2017 Super Power Series (21/5/17) Review

AJPW power series

It’s finally here, the show where the 2017 Champion Carnival winner Shuji Ishikawa gets his shot at Kento Miyahara’s Triple Crown Title belt. Lets see how it goes.

Match 1 – BANG! TV World Heavyweight Title Battle Royal: Osamu Nishimura (c) vs. Atsushi Maruyama, Koji Iwamoto, Trans Am Hiroshi, Yohei Nakajima, Yuma Aoyagi, Yusuke Okada & Yutaka Yoshie

Just a small bit of fun to open proceedings, not much more to say about it really.
Winner: Osamu Nishimura(via bridging clutch) **3/4

Match 2 – Jumbo Tsuruta Memorial match: Masanobu Fuchi & The Great Kabuki vs. Masao Inoue & Takao Omori

Very simple match as you’d expect considering the age of Kabuki and Fuchi now, so not alot happens but it was ok. They do a 10 bell salute for Jumbo afterwards as Fuchi holds a picture of him and after it they play his theme song.
Winner: Fuch(via small package) **

Match 3 – Evolution (Atsushi Aoki & Joe Doering) vs. NEXTREAM (Jake Lee & Naoya Nomura)

This was a good little match. Evolution gets control of Nomura early on but NEXTREAM soon enough makes a come back and Jake hits a big backdrop on Aoki that takes him out so at the end when Joe goes for a tag Aoki isn’t there so he tries to take out NEXTREAM on his own, but it’s not enough and Jake get him with a big backdrop that gets NEXTREAM the win. Just an enjoyable well worked 5 minute match.
Winner: NEXTREAM(via backdrop) ***

Match 4 – GAORA TV Title match: Jun Akiyama (c) vs. Mitsuya Nagai

This was alright, Nagai get control early on and Akiyama makes a come back leading to a decent finishing stretch where Akiyama retains his title with a wrist-clutch Exploder. Match wasn’t all that interesting in the first half but they picked it up well enough.
Winner: Akiyama(via Wrist-clutch Exploder) **3/4

Match 5 – AJPW Junior Heavyweight title match: Hikaru Sato (c) vs. Black Tiger

This was a good match. Tiger takes control early on using a few heel tactics but Sato cames back and things become more even leading to some fun little sequences and in the end he gets the win with his leg trap cross armbreaker submission.
Winner: Hikaru Sato(via Ude-Hishigi-Gyaku-Juji-Gatame) ***

Match 6 – AJPW World Tag Team Title Match: The Big Guns (The Bodyguard & Zeus) (c) vs. KAI & Kengo Mashimo

Solid match-up here, was well paced and back and forth throughout. Big guns obviously use their power throughout to try to get the upper-hand while KAI & Kengo are a new team and struggle throughout to work together with some a few attempted double team stuff going wrong. Despite this they manage to actually win the titles after Kengo manages to get Zeus with a small package though The Big Guns do come very close to retaining. Just good work all around from everyone.
Winners: KAI/Kengo(via small package) ***1/4

Main Event – Triple Crown Title Match: Kento Miyahara (c) vs. Shuji Ishikawa

This was a really great main event. Shuji gets a bit of control working on Kento’s back but aside from that it was very back and forth throughout and really delivered a tense last few minutes with lots of dramatic near-falls. Just lots of great enjoyable action from two fantastic wrestlers. Shuji wins the belt with a wrist-clutch Olympic slam which I guess is the ‘Miyahara Killer’ move that he referred to in an earlier interview. Kento certainly didn’t go down easily and it was valiant effort from him trying to retain the belt that he had held for over 15 months but it just wasn’t enough and Shuji was the better man. Terrific match-up overall, really enjoyed it.
Winner: Shuji Ishikawa(via Miyahara Killer) ****1/4

So this was a pretty good show, the Main even definitely delivered big time and I quite enjoyed the Junior and tag team title matches. All Japan’s been on quite a good roll fair play.
