NJPW G1 Climax 27 2017 Day 17 (11/8/17) Review

It’s the last day for A Block as we see who’ll be the first person in the final on Sunday. Tanahashi or Naito? either way it’s sure to be one hoot of a match.

A Block Match 1 – Bad Luck Fale vs. Yuji Nagata

Nagata’s final G1 match ever and it was really good. Sadly Nagata doesn’t get the win but the crowd completely rally behind him and he puts in a great effort coming right at Fale with no fucks given. Of course this doesn’t work so well in the beginning so Fale gets to be in control, so Nagata smartly decides to go after Fale’s leg and manages to hit some big manoeuvres includng an exploder and big backdrop. But despite putting up a helluva fight, Fale managed to get Nagata with the Bad Luck Fall and get the win. Great work from both guys, really managed to go out there and deliver. The end moment was really special too, Fale shows his respect to Nagata and the entire crowd hold Blue Justice signs, chanting for him. A truly emotional moment. Thank you Nagata! what final G1 run too.
Winner: Fale [12] (via Bad Luck Fall) ***3/4

A Block Match 2 – YOSHI-HASHI vs. Togi Makabe

Good match but can’t say I cared much for it since they are the two guys I care about least in A Block. They did well though and delivered a straight up back and forth match filled with solid action that kept a good pace. That’s all there is to it.
Winner: Makabe [8] (via King Kong Knee drop) ***1/4

A Block Match 3 – Tomohiro Ishii vs. Zack Sabre Jr.

These guys had a corker at the G1 USA Special and they had another great little match here too. Sabre continued to use his technical skills and agility whilst Ishii was more reliant on his brawn, launching lots of big strikes at Zack. It all lead to a very enjoyable back and forth contest ending with Zack tangling up Ishii in a submission that there seemed to be no escape from, but it takes a long while before Ishii finally submit, showcasing the guys resilience as he really was trapped and the hold looked like hell. After the match Ishii had have both his arm and knee bandaged before heading to the back showing the extent of Zack’s damage.
Winner: Sabre [10] (via submission) ****

A Block Match 4 – Kota Ibushi vs. Hirooki Goto

Another great little match-up. They just really went at it and didn’t let up much at all. Crowd were fired up and really into it too, definitely one of Goto’s best performances of the G1 and Ibushi took everything like champ as per usual. Really enjoyed it.
Winner: Goto [10] (via GTR) ****

A Block Main Event – Tetsuya Naito vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi

Incredible main event to end the day and quite possibly my favourite match of the 3 they’ve had this year. You had Naito going after Tanahashi’s injured arm and Tana going after Naito’s leg. They have a nice call back to the finish of their last match, with Tanahashi locking in the cloverleaf but this time Naito wouldn’t submit and made it to the ropes after a long struggle with the Cloverleaf looking excruciating before the ropebreak. In the end though Naito picks up the win after two Destino’s and advances to the final as many predicted. Match had great drama, an awesome atmosphere and was just fantastic stuff overall.
Winner: Naito [14] (via Destino) ****3/4

So that’s it for A Block, lots of good stuff to enjoy on this final night especially the main event and Nagata’s final G1 Hurrah. Just one more place in the final to be decided in B Block’s last day tomorrow, lets see if they can also deliver the goods too.
