WWE NXT Takeover: War games Review

wargames

It’s the latest NXT Takeover, featuring the much anticipated return of War Games, the Cage may not have a roof, but I’m sure its gonna be a barrel of fun. Lets go.

Kassius Ohno vs. Lars Sullivan

Very good opener to start things, it was short, sweet  and physical, with Lars really impressing in his Takeover debut. He got to show off his strength and absorbed all of Ohno’s stiff strikes before hitting Muso to win the match. Big fan of Lars indirectly keeping the wrestling spirit of Takeshi Rikio alive and he’s got a bright future ahead of him if he keeps up the good work he’s been doing so far.
Winner: Lars (via Muso) ***1/2

Aleister Black vs. Velveteen Dream

Speaking of standout performances, this absolutely ruled, it had great character work, storytelling and action, with Dream emulating Rick Rude some with his tights and mannerisms. Velvteen Dream wanted Black to acknowledge him and I think its safe to say he really proved himself, this was a breakout performance for him and although he lost, he still came out of it a star. It’s great seeing how far Patrick Clark has come these last few years since first appearing on tough enough and it looks as though he’s found something that really works for him. That’s not to detract from Black though who also did a great job and was impressive himself. I the end this is the kind of match that was elevated by it’s other factors other than the in-ring work(which was really good anyway).
Winner: Black (via Black Mass) ****1/2

-After the match Aleister Black, finally says Velveteen Dreams name, welcoming him to infamy. Awesome!

NXT Womens Title Match: Nikki Cross vs. Ember Moon vs. Peyton Royce vs. Kairi Sane

Really fun 4 way match, all the ladies worked hard and there was lots of good action and nearfalls going on with everyone playing their part well. Moon finally gets her title win, which felt like the right choice, considering how long she’s been gunning for it. She actually gets the win with a weird double Eclipse on Nikki Peyton which was a little convoluted but still looked cool as fuck.
Winner: Moon (via double eclipse) ***3/4

-after the match Asuka comes in the ring to hand Ember the bely which was very lovely.

NXT Title Match: Andrade Cien Almas vs. Drew Mcintyre (c)

Awesome title match. These guys kept consistently kept a good pace throughout and filled it was some great back and forth action. Was really happy to see Almas win the belt here and he did so in very brutal fashion, hitting a hanging version of his Hammerlock DDT which looked like death for Mcintyre. Apparently Mcintyre also suffered a potential bicep tear in the match so that sucks. Great stuff all around though.
Winner: Almas (via hanging hammerlock DDT) ****1/4

War Games Match: SAniTY vs. Undisputed Era vs. Authors of Pain/Roderick Strong

Well this was nuts. Not the most exciting match the begin, Strong, Cole and Young start the match and then rest of Undisputed Era get control, all the action was solid but not the most enticing. But things really pick-up once Aop come in and start murdering people as it turns into absolute chaos with lots of fun action and spots and even some weapons being brought into the mix. I do think the match goes on a little too long but has a hell of a lot to enjoy. Big win for Undisputed Era too, to make them look strong, which is what they needed really. May have been different to the traditional War Games match but it was still a hell of a lot of fun
Winner: Undisputed Era ****1/4

What a fantastic show overall, probably one of the best Takeover shows there have ever been, every match delivered in their own way and 3 of them were really great. Black/Dream was definitely my favourite but I’d certainly recommend all of them. Lets just hope Survivor Series can match up somehow.
