Time fort his years HIAC PPV with two big cell matches featuring Randy Orton/Jeffy Hardy and Braun Strowman/Roman Reigns. Lets go!
Kick-off Match: Smackdown tag Title Match: New Day (c) vs. Rusev Day
Terrfic match-up. They give Rusev Day a tiny bit of control but once that’s out of the way we get lots of fun frantic action which has become the usual for these New Day matches and that’s certainly not a bad thing.. Easily bought the match going either way and the ending in particular is tremendous. Aiden English actually ends up locking in the Accolade himself on Kofi and when Big E tries to stop it Rusev kicks him in the face and it honestly seemed like Kofi may actually tap as the crowd erupted with noise. However Kofi manages to reach the ropes and ends up hitting a trouble in paradise to retain the belts for his team. What an exciting ending though. great start.
Winners: New Day (via Trouble in Paradise) ****
Match 1 – HIAC Match – Randy Orton vs. Jeff Hardy
This was legit awesome and way better than anticipated. They get right into the action with the spots and weapons and things get pretty brutal at times. Orton ends up bleeding from his back and leg and in one of the most vile moments ever produced in a WWE ring, sticks a screwdriver in Hardy’s ear and twists it. Talk about pushing that PG rating. At the end Hardy of course does his mad fuck spot and swings off the top of the cell to splash Orton through a table, but Orton moves so Jeff goes splat instead. Ref straight away calls for EMTS and the Cell to be lifted, Orton then argues with him before finally pining Jeff for the win. Enjoyed that a helluva lot.
Winner: Orton (via Jeff being an idiot) ****1/4
Match 2 – Smackdown Womens title Match: Charlotte Flair (c) vs. Becky Lynch
Really solid match. Becky focuses on Charlotte’s arm giving her a bit of control whilst Charlotte does he best to fight her off and stay in things. It was a little sloppy in places but mostly worked well and at the end Becky Counters the spear into small package (which looked quite weird) to finally win the Smackdown Women’s Title once again. Felt like a bit of an abrupt finish but very happy to see Becky with the belt once again as was majority of the crowd.
Winner: Becky (via small package) ***1/2
Match 3 – Raw Tag title match: Ziggler/Mcintyre vs. Rollins/Abrose
Great tag match. Ziggler/Mcintyre gets control a couple of times via distraction, the second time they have control of Rollins for a considerable period of time and whilst they had some good cutoff’s and kept it interesting enough, it did arguably go on a little too long. However it does lead to really hot finishing stretch with good action and nearfalls. I loved the finish too where Rollins goes for his superplex/Flacon arrow combo, but as he get zigs up for the falcon Drew hits him with claymore kick, allowing Ziggler to get the pinfall. Really good effort from everyone.
Winners: Ziggler/Mcintyre (via Claymore) ****
Match 4 – WWE Title match – Samoa Joe vs. AJ Styles
Kinda baffling this wasn’t in a cell considering how personal the rivalry is. This was still great match nonetheless though that was on par if not better than their summerslam one, certainly better paced at least.
It was also structured in similar manner with Joe getting some control and Styles bumping around very energetically. Some good big moves are also busted out and it was just very enjoyable overall.
For the finish Joe locks in coquina clutch and Styles manages to roll into a pin counter that get him the 3 count. How ever Joe argues that Styles taps and a replay shows that Styles did indeed tap before the 3 count but the ref never saw it. Bit of an odd finish but it does give the feud a reason to continue.
Winner: Styles (via pin counter) ****
Match 5 – Miz/Maryse vs. Daniel Bryan/Brie Bella
This was solid. It was mostly Bryan and Miz in the match and they have a good bit of back and forth with Miz also getting some control though it did all feel a little standard at times. Brie and Maryse finally come in towards the end, and the finish ends up being Maryse countering Brie’s roll-up into one of her own whilst pulling the tights for a 3 count to steal the victory. The execution of it however was very sloppy. Fun match overall though.
Winner: Miz/Maryse (via roll-up) ***1/4
Match 6 – Raw Womens Title Match – Ronda Rousey w/Natalya (c) vs. Alexa Bliss w/Mickie James/Alicia Fox
This was Really good. Ronda has been having issues with her Ribs so Bliss took advantage and targeted them which let her have a fair amount of offence and control. It was a nice change of pace from the usual Ronda match and it was nicely worked though a bit clunky in places with Bliss giving one of her most impressive performances thus far and Ronda doing pretty well with her rib selling. There also a couple of spots with the women at ringside but by the end Ronda manages to fight through the pain to make Bliss submit with the armbar. Really liked that.
Winner: Rousey (via armbar) ***3/4
-Backstage Joe complains to Paige about how he actually win so Paige gives him a re-match at Super Showdown and accepts Joe’s request to make it no DQ.
Main Event – Universal Title Match: Roman Reigns (c) vs. Braun Strowman
I thought this match was going great with the men having a lovely big back and forth battle on the go. But then Roman spears Strowman through a table and all the bullshit comes rushing in as Braun and Roman seemingly to decide sleep for a while as their tag partners all come rushing down and start battling each other around the cell and on top of it including Ziggler and Rollins re-enacting the spot from the Rollins/Ambrose Cell match where they both fall off the side through announce tables. Probably the least I’ve ever cared about a cell falling spot as it just felt tacked on and adds nothing to the actual match.
Now I didn’t mind all that brawling so much but then Lesnar comes out to ruin everything. He breaks into the cell F-5’s both men and the ref declares a no contest and they fad out as the crowd start chanting bullshit. That was a proper WCW crap ending. A non-finish in a cell is something that should never be done, I really don’t care about Lesnar and this really didn’t work for me at all which is a shame since I was really enjoying the match up to that point ah well.
NO Winner ***
This was on route to be one of the WWE’s best and most consistent shows and it still kinda is but it ended on such a sour note that it really dampens the opinion on it overall…Ah well Both the tag title matches, Jeff/Orton, Joe/Styles and Bliss/Ronda are all definitely worth your time anyway. With Jeff/Orton being my favourite match of the night.
